The research program will perform petroleum geological and geochemical research to develop understanding and practical applications in the areas of A) the carbon efficient recovery of fossil fuels, and B) the study of the deep biosphere processes in fossil fuel reservoirs. Specific objectives are 1) to develop usage of new mass spectrometry advances in petroleum geochemistry and the development of methods for dating how long oil has been reservoired to better understand the origin of the oil sands in Alberta and 2) to investigate the processes of coal microbial biodegradation in the subsurface and examine the feasibility of accelerating microbial methane production from coal as an alternative to conventional coal use for energy generation.
