Enhancement of bioremediation technology using advanced molecular assessment of hydrocarbon degradation

Bioremediation technologies are a viable option for the removal of hydrocarbon pollution from**soil and water samples. However, in order to optimize their efficiency, a better understanding**of biodegradation processes, and their products involved in the remediation treatment are needed.**In this project, the PRG group at the University of Calgary will collaborate with Delta**Remediation Inc., to investigate the hydrocarbon removal during BioLogix remediation treatment, and assess**the routes for its optimization. To this end, state-of-the-art analytical techniques and**innovative data analysis strategies available at the PRG will be used for advanced molecular assessment of**hydrocarbons, their heteroatom analogs, and degradation products generated during bioremediation. Obtained**chemical information will generate better understanding of microbiological processes, pathways, and**physicochemical variables controlling the efficiency of Delta's bioremediation technology, and contribute to its**future optimization, and the reduction of the environmental impacts of existing and future contaminated sites in**Canada.
