In the last five years we have witnessed an increased interest in next generation (5G) wireless communication systems. It is envisaged that 5G systems will constitute a paradigm shift in this important sector of telecommunications. Because of the significant increase in data rates that 5G systems will have to accommodate and the constraints imposed by radio spectrum scarcity, the required bandwidth efficiency in 5G systems will have to be extremely high. In order to achieve the requirements for 5G, all the resources available in the time, frequency and space domains must be utilized efficiently. The objective of the proposed research is to develop a tensor framework for Space-Time-Frequency (STF) modulation schemes that not only will aid the design of communication systems for 5G, but will also provide a novel structured approach and insight to the use of STF resources for transmission of information. Canada, through its world renowned industry, has been a major player in wireless telecommunication over many years, a position that it is important to maintain also in research towards 5G systems. This work addresses issues that are critical to the development of 5G wireless communication systems, creating value for the Canadian economy in the form of a strategic knowledge advantage that is essential for the development of products in this important technological area.***A tensor is a multi-dimensional array. In the proposed framework, an STF channel symbol is a three dimensional array, spanning the time frequency and space domains. A three dimensional array corresponds to a tensor of order 3, and opens the possibility of using powerful mathematical techniques, such as tensor decompositions. The proposed work will provide a unified framework for STF modulation, with immediate application to 5G systems, and will allow the development of signal processing algorithms required for implementation of such schemes. The strong mathematical foundations of this framework will also make possible to gain important insights into the subject of STF communication systems in general, and will impact the design of such systems for 5G, and beyond. The proposed work addresses theoretical aspects, as well as practical issues that are required to use the results of this research for standardization activities, and the design of 5G wireless communication systems.***
