OTI Lumionics Inc. is a Toronto-based organic light emitting diode (OLED) manufacturer for novel lighting and display solutions. OTI has developed breakthrough proprietary technologies to reduce the marginal cost of OLED production, the capital cost of OLED production equipment, and increase performance metrics of OLED devices. They are currently in the process of drastically ramping up their OLED production capacity by moving to an in-line OLED production system, which utilizes a continuous OLED manufacturing process as opposed to a batch-to-batch process. In collaboration with OTI Lumionics, we have identified some key molecules which are of great interest for potential commercial integration into OLEDs. However before commercialization is possible, additional characterization is required on a larger scale. OTI Lumionics would therefore require a minimum of 100g batch of a product of interest to test inline processing and manufacturing. Due to the lack of commercial chemical sources of our novel compounds it is important to address the scale up and process chemistry as well as its effect on the OLED performance. Finally, we will train HQP as part of this excellent training program that includes valuable skills in specialized organic chemistry, chemical engineering and scale up, experimental design and a holistic understanding of the development and characterization of organic electronics, a field that is currently blossoming in Canada and worldwide. The application knowledge gained from this NSERC CRD research program will not only be beneficial for industry in Ontario, but for all of Canada.
