With the planned arrival of 5G wireless standardization in year 2020 and further emergence of initial concepts for its evolution toward the next generation, we have witnessed drastic development in wireless services and applications. New technologies and application environments, such as the Internet of Things, augmented reality, mobile multimedia, mobile cloud computing, and mobile data analytics, are creating service demands that stress the capacity of current wireless infrastructure. With a goal of increasing service capacity and increasing wireless spectral efficiency, two strategies that are widely regarded as being critically important in the design of new wireless systems are multi-tier access and massive MIMO. They both bring new opportunities for network operators to improve service quality, increase service flexibility, and reduce operation cost. In collaboration with Ericsson, one of the largest telecommunication innovators in the world with a strong research and business presence in Canada, we will investigate the theories and practical designs of multi-tier wireless networking with massive MIMO systems. Low-complexity but effective resource management and transmission scheduling schemes will allow efficient utilization of the limited radio resources despite the complex heterogeneity in future systems and will provide optimal service experience to the end users. Through mathematical analysis, computer simulation, and system experimentation, we will generate practical guidelines on how to design and operate future-generation wireless systems to optimally balance the tradeoff between service performance and networking cost. Thus, the outcomes of the proposed research are expected to benefit both our industry partner and the Canadian information and communication industry at large, by promoting engineering theory, technical methods, and standardization policies that can lead to system improvement, cost reduction, sustainable growth, and long-term competitiveness.******
