With the emerging prevalence of new bandwidth-hungry applications, such as mobile social networking, wireless multimedia, and Internet of Things, the latest-generation wireless service infrastructure is already facing severe resource shortage in its struggle to satisfy the exploding service demands. In response, a heterogeneous multi-tier wireless networking paradigm, where smaller and autonomous cells and relays are deployed concurrently with the traditional macro cells, have been promoted by system designers and network operators. There are many challenges in the design and deployment of multiple tiers of overlapping base stations and relays, especially under the stringent data-rate and signal-to-interference requirements imposed by ever popular immersive and interactive multimedia applications. In particular, radio interference is expected to be a key barrier to desirable coverage and capacity in the next-generation heterogeneous wireless systems. Innovative interference management techniques are needed to counter the extremely complex radio activity patterns generated by the diverse, autonomous, and dynamic set of transmitters in the multi-tier environment. In collaboration with Ericsson, one of the largest telecommunication innovators in the world with a strong research and business presence in Canada, we will investigate into the theories and practical designs for interference management in next-generation multi-tier heterogeneous wireless networks. Intelligent interference suppression and mitigation schemes will allow efficient utilization of the limited radio resources despite the complex heterogeneity in future systems and provide optimal service experience to the end users. We will generate practical guidelines on how to design and operate future heterogeneous wireless systems, to optimally balance the tradeoff between service performance and networking cost. The outcomes of this research are expected to benefit both our industry partner and the Canadian information and communication industry at large, by promoting engineering theory, technical methods, and standardization policies that can lead to system improvement, cost reduction, sustainable growth, and long-term competitiveness.
