Municipal, commercial, industrial, and agricultural processes create large volumes of wastewaters**contaminated by bacteria, viruses, and organic/inorganic compounds. Of current interest for Canadian**municipalities is the need for treatment of municipal stormwater which is a type of wastewater given it has**similar characteristics to municipal sewage. Wastewaters can be treated using technologies including biological**aerobic and anaerobic treatment, chemical coagulation, membranes, photocatalysis, adsorption, advance**oxidation processes, and ozonation. Recently, electrochemical treatment has become of interest given its ability**to provide simultaneous disinfection and oxidation/reduction of chemical compounds. Advantages of**electrochemical treatment include the ability to treat wastewaters at ambient temperature and pressure, limited**production of solid waste products, and limited addition of process chemicals. Disadvantages include limited**treatment rates due to reactions being restricted to the electrode surfaces and to high amounts of suspended**solids, potential for high energy consumption, and creation of chemical byproducts that may be more toxic than**the original compounds. The use of electrochemical treatment as part of a treatment process train may be**considered to overcome the limited treatment rates due to high suspended solids concentrations. For instance,**the use of coagulation/flocculation pretreatment could remove solids prior to an electrochemical treatment**process. BioLargo Water has been developing a novel electrochemical technology for wastewater treatment**termed the Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) targeting wastewaters that will address both disinfection and**decontamination. Thus far, the AOS has shown excellent disinfection performance for waters including**agricultural waters, poultry wastewaters and well waters. However, the performance of the AOS process has**been less successful for wastewaters with high total suspended solids (TSS) that foul the reactor over time.**Thus, the goal of this project is to assess the AOS system as part of a treatment process train including a**pretreatment process meant to reduce TSS levels.
