英文摘要
Light field (LF) technology is the latest emerging innovation in digital media, seeing as an "upgrade" to the way our eyes and optical devices take in light, with the potential to revolutionize the way we view and deliver real-life and virtual video content. However, despite the fact that some LF cameras are commercially available, light field capturing technology is still under development, while storage, bandwidth and processing requirements for light field volumes are excessive. Displaying light field content may be the most exciting part of this breakthrough technology, but display technologies must also advance, clearly at this point being a work in progress.**Our goal is to close the gap between theory and practical implementation of light field by developing solutions for the entire pipeline to enable this new market. We will develop a comprehensive suite of new methods to efficiently capture, process, and display light field content, for viewing over any network and on a range of LF displays, from large screens to mobile devices and headsets. Each stage of our work will be steered by psychophysical assessments and user quality of experience evaluations involving all types of capturing and displaying devices currently available and will be guided and assessed by our industry partner to ensure its commercial viability. Provision will be made for seamless integration with augmented reality content.**As light field opens up new creative avenues for movies, live action footage and visual effects, our developments will offer new market opportunities including LF 2D and immersive LF applications.**The resulting leap in visual quality will dramatically increase the impact of content being viewed, with profound implications for education and training, entertainment, social networking, advertising, and related sectors. Canadian educational institutions, manufacturing, entertainment, and communications companies adopting this technology will gain a significant advantage over their competitors.**
