英文摘要
This proposal is for a research program in new low cost, high energy density battery chemistries based on abundant, sustainable materials. This includes research in magnesium and aluminum batteries, which are theoretically predicted to store more energy than current lithium ion batteries and are based on inexpensive, sustainable materials that are produced in large quantities in Canada. These battery chemistries are especially interesting for large scale energy storage, including applications for harnessing Canada's rich renewable power sources.******There are significant technical hurdles in developing these battery chemistries. My laboratory has recently developed a new type of research battery which enables us to conduct fundamental research towards the development of these battery chemistries in a new way, and, furthermore, has the ability to test battery materials at high temperatures. These methods enable researchers in my laboratory to fundamentally investigate battery materials which have previously been unexplored. Using these methods researchers involved in this program will systematically explore new electrode materials and electrolytes for magnesium and aluminum batteries. In addition, these methods will also allow researchers in my laboratory to investigate the new metal-ion batteries for high temperature applications, such as in sterilizable medical devices.******Researchers trained in this program will be highly skilled in materials science, sustainability and electrochemistry and will be well suited for high demand careers in materials in Canada, especially in Canada's battery, renewable energy, and automotive industries.
