The presence of a multitude of organic contaminants in wastewaters requires increasingly efficient technologies**to avoid contamination of surface and coastal waters. In the last 20 years, the presence of trace organic**contaminants (TOCs) such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products in wastewaters has stimulated**research for new wastewater treatment processes able to reduce the concentration of those contaminants in**municipal sewage. The ECOTHOR-W technology, developed by E2Metrix, is a promising technology for the**removal of diverse contaminants from industrial wastewaters such as of fats, oils and grease, trace metals, total**suspended solids, and even coliforms. E2Metrix wishes to explore the application of its flagship technology to**the treatment of municipal wastewaters and desires to measure the formation of transformation products of**TOCs frequently reported in urban wastewaters. Also, it is interested in the toxicity of the treated effluents**towards aquatic organisms. Here we propose a 6-month project in close collaboration with E2Metrix to**determine optimal parameters for the electrochemical treatment of municipal wastewaters by measuring the**formation of transformation products and measuring the whole effluent toxicity of the treated wastewater. In**that way, the ECOTHOR-W technology will not produce of unwanted transformation products and the toxicity**of the effluent will be greatly reduced with minimal use of energy. We will adopt a two-fold strategy that will**allow us to attain that objective in due time: 1) Measure the formation of major transformation products of**frequently reported trace organic contaminants using a method based on liquid chromatography and**high-resolution mass spectrometry 2) Compare the toxicity of electrochemically treated and untreated**municipal effluents using a sensitive assay recently developed by my group that uses water fleas (D. magna) as**test organism. This project will optimize ECOTHOR-W technology, which will could ameliorate the quality of**municipal effluents and reduce their negative impact the environment. Additionally, our work will give**E2Metrix the opportunity to expand to the municipal wastewater plant market and create new jobs in Canada.
