Human computer interaction (HCI) is a rapidly growing field with potential applications on several fronts such as occupational therapy, behavioral studies, extreme & crime simulation, gaming, autonomous transportation, and more. North Inc. (formerly, Thalmic Labs Inc.) is a Canadian-based company that develops wearable technologies that seamlessly blends the real and the digital worlds. The company's MyoTM electromyographic gesture armband has been used successfully for various purposes, including in prosthetic arm control through sensing muscle activity, touch-free control over real-rime information in surgery, and illumination/light control by muscular movement in stage performances. The company is also involved in HCI technologies involving integrated optical signal processing. This Engage project addresses a key requirement of the optical HCI sector by developing optical filters employing a scalable and integrable process. The University of Waterloo team along with North personnel will employ thin film and microfabrication techniques to design and develop filter technology through bandgap engineering of the materials system.
