A central challenge in nanoscience is the organization of functional components into deliberately designed patterns, to achieve specific function. Because of its molecular recognition specificity, DNA presents a unique opportunity to address this problem. Our group has used DNA to synthesize 2D- and 3D-structures with deliberate variation of geometry, size and permeability, and we showed that they readily penetrate mammalian cells. In this proposal, we develop these molecules towards applications for the selective release of therapeutics into diseased cells. We also describe the incorporation of transition metals, gold nanoparticles and synthetic polymers, towards applications in nanoelectronics, plasmonics and biological sensing.
