Resilient and durable concrete pavements

Road condition and safety is one of the major concerns of users and public agencies. Current investments in**road maintenance are insufficient and will lead to a decline in condition over time. In addition to this, society is**increasingly aware of the need of incorporating sustainable criteria in pavement management. This research**proposal aims to enhance the sustainable use of concrete pavements in Canadian conditions. The overall**objective of this research is to develop and deliver high quality, low maintenance, long-life, sustainable and**resilient pavements to serve the public. In order to achieve this goal, this research will investigate the use of**performance-based specifications in concrete pavement, pavement surface characteristics, application of**concrete pavement in the municipal environment and precast panels for fast track rehabilitation, asset**management and use of recycled concrete aggregates. This specific research projects within this proposal are**directed at improving concrete pavement performance and sustainable asset management, concrete pavement**surface characteristics, and development of innovative concrete pavement designs for provincial and municipal**applications in Canada. The topics covered in this research proposal comprise innovative solutions that address**key issues faced by the Cement Association of Canada (CAC), the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)**and several Canadian cities, municipalities and ready mixed concrete companies.
