Resilient and durable concrete pavements

Road condition and safety is one of the major concerns of users and public agencies. Current investments in road maintenance are insufficient and will lead to a decline in condition over time. In addition to this, society is increasingly aware of the need of incorporating sustainable criteria in pavement management. This research proposal aims to enhance the sustainable use of concrete pavements in Canadian conditions. The overall objective of this research is to develop and deliver high quality, low maintenance, long-life, sustainable and resilient pavements to serve the public. In order to achieve this goal, this research will investigate the use of performance-based specifications in concrete pavement, pavement surface characteristics, application of concrete pavement in the municipal environment and precast panels for fast track rehabilitation, asset management and use of recycled concrete aggregates. This specific research projects within this proposal are directed at improving concrete pavement performance and sustainable asset management, concrete pavement surface characteristics, and development of innovative concrete pavement designs for provincial and municipal applications in Canada. The topics covered in this research proposal comprise innovative solutions that address key issues faced by the Cement Association of Canada (CAC), the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) and several Canadian cities, municipalities and ready mixed concrete companies.
