We are working with the biotechnology company, VivaVax Inc., to develop a novel vaccine delivery model.**Currently, VivaVax is developing delivery solutions for the primary vaccines MMRII (Merck, United States)**and Gardasil 13 (Merck, United States), which are used globally to prevent infections of mumps, measles,**rubella, and human papillomavirus. The main innovation in VivaVax's vaccine delivery model is its ability to**maintain a near constant vaccine temperature while the external environmental temperature changes. VivaVax**achieves this by developing a proprietary thermal-protective formulation that is a mixture of amphiphilic**polymer constructs on poly-saccharide backbones, which have shown emulsion stability and biodegradability.**One of the company's challenges has been the large uncertainties in the consistency and quality of each**encapsulated vaccine package that is a result of the the traditional high pressure homogenization manufacturing**processes. For this NSERC Engage project, VivaVax will work with my research group to apply innovative**microfluidics technology to create multi-phasic encapsulations of the vaccines, within thin films of the**thermal-protective formulation, so that the vaccines can be protected in monodisperse and highly consistent**double emulsions.
