The Calgary company Advanced Technology Structures produces a range of prefabricated buildings for many**applications including agricultural and other storage, office accommodation, emergency shelter, and housing.**A common feature of these buildings is their hemispherical cylinder shape which may be modified to satisfy a**particular application. The company needs to understand the wind loads on these structures as part of the**design process, but the geometry has not been wind tunnel tested in detail, and these tests are prohibitively**expensive for a small company to undertake. As an alternative, this project will use the well-known open**source computational fluid dynamics software OpenFOAM to simulate the wind loads. We have identified the**few wind tunnel tests carried out on relevant geometries. This project will begin by simulating these tests,**identifying the cases that cause extreme wind loads and assess the accuracy of various turbulence models in**predicting them. The project outcomes will be accurate but conservative wind load estimations from software**that can easily check any proposed changes to the building geometry.
