The consumption of poultry meat has been increasing mainly due to its health benefit, convenience in cooking,**and reasonable cost. Global consumption of antimicrobials in food animal production was estimated at 63,151**tons in 2010 with an increasing trend. This practice has been linked to the spread of antimicrobial-resistant**pathogens in both poultry and humans, posing a significant public health threat. The European Union has**banned the use of antibiotic growth promoters in animal food production since 2006 and this is expected in**Canada soon. There is an on-going need to help the poultry industry prepare for and implement the reduced use**of antibiotics/elimination of the preventive use of antibiotics in Canada. Red Dog Enterprises Ltd. has decided**to partner with the Yang lab to investigate Red Osier Dogwood extracts as alternatives to in-feed antibiotics to**enhance growth performance and gut health in broiler chickens. For the current project, two specific objectives**have been established. For Objective 1, we will determine the growth performance, organ weights and**occurrence of white stripping of broiler chickens fed different levels of Red Osier Dogwood extracts. For**Objective 2, we will determine the immune response, gut microbiota, oxidative stress, and inflammation in**broiler chickens fed different levels of Red Osier Dogwood extracts after Salmonella Lipopolysaccharide**challenge. The proposed Engage project will support preliminary research and bridge relations between Red**Dog Enterprises Ltd. and the Yang laboratory. This funds will yield new knowledge about putative**mechanisms that may form the basis of future partnership program applications (ie: NSERC CRD).
