Murata Power Solutions is a major manufacturer of power-electronic components and power supplies, headquartered in Markham, Ontario. However, due to its traditional focus on products and solutions for telecommunications, it is missing solutions for automotive industry in its present line of products. One such increasingly important line of product is the so-called on-board charger (OBC) for plug-in electric vehicles (PEV). To bridge the aforementioned gap, this research project aims to design, model, prototype, and test a 4-kW DC-DC converter that will serve as the building block of an OBC. The DC-DC converter to be developed in this project will have galvanic isolation, an input voltage of 400 V, an output voltage varying from 200 V to 400 V. The galvanic isolation will not only ensure compliance to applicable safety standards, but it also allows parallel connection of two or three DC-DC converters, towards a split-phase-input OBC or a three-phase-input OBC, respectively. Based on this modular approach, therefore, the intended DC-DC converter will serve as the building block for a 4-kW, an 8-kW, or a 12-kW complete OBC. ****The project will benefit Canada in at least three ways: 1) it will contribute to further proliferation of electric vehicles in Canada, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive sector; 2) it will enrich the technical knowhow and competitiveness of a Canadian company, Murata, in establishing itself as a major player in the emerging and rapidly growing market of automotive electronics; Murata's success will, in turn, create jobs for Canadians; and 3) it will enrich the experience and training of Ryerson University graduate students and trainees.**
