Genecis is an early-stage, organic waste processing company that turns restaurant food waste into PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates)**biodegradable plastic pellets and fertilizer. PHAs are a type of high quality, biodegradable plastics which can be used to replace a**number of conventional plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene.**Each year, large, full-service restaurants throw away a lot of food, and pay an average of $15,000 per year just to dump it into**landfills. Genecis offers restaurants a sustainable organic waste management solution, that also saves them money on current**organic disposal costs.**Every week, a contracted trucking company collects the organic waste from the restaurants and brings it back to our centralized**facility, where we convert the organic waste into products of higher value. Currently, we are scaling up from a laboratory scale to**60L continuous bioreactors at the UofT Scarborough Campus.**For every 30 tons of organic waste, we will be able to create 1 ton of PHA biodegradable plastics, and 5-10 tons of fertilizer.
