Steel is one of the most used structural material for building infrastructures. The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC), the voice of the Canadian steel industry, is teaming up with the University of British Columbia (UBC) to develop innovative steel structures that are can be used for areas of high seismic activities. The objective of this NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) proposal is to develop a new generation of modular steel structures that are resilient to earthquakes and efficient for construction. The research will be accomplished through advanced analytical simulation and experimental testing to validate the feasibility of the proposed modular steel structure. Once validated, cost and construction analyses will be conducted to ensure that modular construction is superior to the conventional construction in terms of quality and sustainability. Consulting companies and steel fabricators will collaborate with the UBC research team to ensure that the development is practical and economical. Novel design procedure and innovative seismic devices will be developed. The success of the proposed research will immediately bring significant financial benefits to the industry collaborators and Canadian steel industry. Ultimately, it promotes high-performance earthquake resilient steel structures to be built in Canada and worldwide.
