Significant progress in the development of wireless communication systems and their omnipresence requires consistent update and development of new innovative tools, techniques and models for the advancement, simulation and evaluation of cutting-edge designs. The proposal offers a broad research program tailored to research and HQP training in the field of wireless communications. Particular attention will be paid to the role of Physical Layer (PHY) in new generation (5G) of communications systems and its impact on other characteristics of higher layer OSI stack, such as MAC, security, network formation, node mobility and other aspects. Through HQP training the implementation of this proposal will contribute to increased quality of Canadian work force as well as to research potential of both Industry and Academia. Outcomes of the proposed research will be presented to a broad community in the field. The proposed programs focuses on outstanding issues related to 4G 3) virtualization and 4) providing security on the physical layer. In particular, we would investigate how practical scattering environment, defined by tall buildings, walls, and obstacles affect such fundamental characteristics of wireless systems as bit error rate, quality of service, availability and others. Our goal is to develop novel and innovative analytical and numerical tools for investigation of such systems, which, in turn will be significant in the process of their deployment. We will address cooperation of intelligent nodes by means of stochastic graph theory to understand how social networks are formed, study their stability and ability to provide information delivery. Such knowledge is very useful for understanding and managing future data flows, as well as in a large number of applications such as smart cars, intelligent cities, etc. In order to improve security in existing and prospective wireless systems we will investigate a possibility to apply channel derived random sequences to manipulate system transmission parameters. Our goal is to suggest creative means of utilizing an extra layer of security, mathematically describe it and verify its feasibility in different radio-environments. Investigation of network resources allocation, pursued in this proposal, is focused on a creative mathematical modelling of data and services allocation in a distributed and densely populated environments. Furthermore, based on such models, novel optimization problems, addressing both information throughput and energy consumption will be formulated and investigated.
