Tidal Health is a licensed medical cannabis producer based in New Brunswick. They are currently developing new cannabinoid extracts but do not have the capability to assess the extent to which these extracts can enter into and affect the brain following oral administration; this needs to be performed in a pre-clinical animal model. Thus, Tidal Health must rely on a collaboration with a basic researcher that uses pre-clinical animal models in order to assess the usability of their extracts. The Franklin laboratory at Dalhousie University focuses on mouse models of neurological disease, and are able to measure cannabinoids in the mouse brain. The proposed collaboration between Tidal Health and the Franklin laboratory aims to quantify the amount of cannabinoids in the brain of young mice administered one of three newly developed extracts (a high cannabidiol (CBD):low delta9-tetrahydrocannbinol (THC), high THC:low CBD, or a balanced mixture of THC:CBD) in order to establish the brain penetrance of active ingredients in these cannabis products. This pre-clinical research is critical for Tidal Health's research and development goals in the field of medical cannabis, which are ultimately focused on creating consistent and effective products for specified health conditions. This work will also provide trainees in the Franklin laboratory important experience in applied neuroscience research, as well as the opportunity to establish relationships with a growing Canadian company.
