Galaxies and clusters of galaxies reveal the large-scale structure of the Universe. Their distribution on the sky is determined by the cosmological model describing our Universe and the physical processes by which normal, or baryonic, matter forms stars and hot gas and thus becomes visible. By determining the statistical distribution of galaxies and clusters on the sky, and by understanding the physics of star formation and gas evolution within them, one can determine the salient properties of the cosmological model, e.g. expansion rate, the amount of matter, both baryonic and dark, in addition to the nature of dark energy.******I am a leading member of the Ultimate XMM Extra-galactic survey (XXL), a large, multi-wavelength survey of galaxy clusters built upon the largest single XMM-Newton project ever awarded. Working both on this survey and it predecessor, the XMM-LSS survey, I have developed a strong track record for myself and my HQP at performing high-impact science within a leading international collaboration. My interests and those of my HQP centre upon the discovery and scientific analysis of very distant galaxy clusters and the evolution of galaxies within clusters over large intervals of cosmic time.
