To support effective understanding and decision making of complex industrial datasets, the company needs to visualize both structural data that can be related to representational 3D models, as well as abstract data, coherently in one photorealistic digital environment. The company has established expertise in creating and rendering representational 3D models, but it needs novel approaches for visualizing abstract data effectively in a photorealistic environment. Combining photorealistic rendering and information visualization - that mostly operates in 2D with abstract charts such as line and bar charts - will significantly extend the scope and capability of the company's production, enhancing the company's competitiveness on the global stage of industrial data analytics providers. We hypothesize that by rendering the information visualization of abstract data in 3D, coherently with the representational models, we may facilitate a systemic comprehension of the many facets of complex industrial datasets, promote accurate data perception and efficient decision-making. This engage project is the first step towards creating methods for seamlessly incorporating information visualization in 3D rendering and evaluate its effectiveness.We will first determine the use case that has immediate need of information visualization inside a 3D rendering and has practical impact, as well as the type of abstract data that needs to be visualized. Then, we will use human-centred methodologies such as extracting the tasks that people might want to perform on the visualization and understanding the context of use. We will research through a design space exploration how to best represent the abstract data on top of the 3D visualization through design space exploration. We will then design and run an in-lab user study to compare the most promising design variations from our design space. Based on the study results, we will derive how compatible the abstract representations of data are with the 3D visualizations, how people understand the visual mappings, and what are the benefits and disadvantages of combining these two types of information visually.
