Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are a key component in electric vehicles. Current LIBs with liquid-electrolytes have problems in their lifespan, energy density and, in particular, safety. Consequently, solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLBs) have attracted much attention due to their non-flammable nature. Solid-electrolytes such as Li6PS5X (X=Cl, Br) are promising materials due to their low cost and ability to deliver high ionic conductivity. However, the Li+-ion transport is poorly understood.In this project, Prof. Huang and researchers at the GLABAT Solid-State Battery Inc. (GLABAT) will use state-of-the-art solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy to study Li-ion transport in solid-state electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries used in electric vehicles. Since SSNMR provides nuclide-specific information on structure and dynamics, they will use various state-of-the-art 7Li solid-state NMR spectroscopic techniques to directly probe Li+ diffusion in pure Li6PS5X electrolytes and in their interfaces with electrode materials. The outcome will enable GLABAT to improve the performance of current and design new all-solid-state batteries.
