This proposed research program is between scientists at Exciton Technologies Inc. and McGill's department of chemistry. Exiton's scientists have devised a new class of silver based antimicrobial agents to be used in wound treatment. In an effort to better characterize these new derivatives a new series of silver(III) periodate complexes will be studied and their formulations optimized for more sustained and efficient antimicrobial activity. The work at McGill will include a range of advanced techniques including. X-ray crystallography, Raman Spectroscopy, and solid state NMR. With these methods the solid state structures and solution chemistry of these formulations will be determined. These properties will then be used in an iterative fashion to improve their antimicrobial efficiency and lifetimes. In all, this work is expected to improve on the product of a dynamic Canadian company which will be useful in many clinical and hospital setting for advanced wound treatment.
