Dr. Maciejko develops mathematical models based on the laws of quantum mechanics to understand and predict the properties of topological insulators, a novel class of materials recently discovered that conduct electricity on their surfaces almost without dissipating heat. If this striking physical property can be harnessed in microprocessors, topological insulators could enable the design of smaller and more efficient mobile computing devices. By focusing on largely unexplored regimes where electrons interact strongly with one another and material imperfections cannot be ignored, Dr. Maciejkos research on topological insulators is poised to make significant contributions to our basic understanding of quantum matter.
