英文摘要
Fourth generations cellular technology (4G) can no longer meet the unrelenting demands of new emerging wireless applications such as Internet-of-Things and ultra high definition video streaming. It is expected that in the next decade, trillions of mobile communication devices will connect people to people, people to machines, and machines to machines, forming a digitally connected society in which anyone or anything can access information anywhere, at any time. Fully realizing this level of connectivity and network capacity necessitates the creation of a new underlying information infrastructure. Thus, there is a concerted effort to define a new, fifth generation (5G) technology with significantly improved performance requirements of 10x to 100x or more in terms of throughput, latency, and connectivity. However, a significant impediment to improving the performance of wireless networks is the scarcity of quality microwave spectrum. Two potential methods by which 5G networks are envisioned to overcome these limitations are i) to complement microwave spectrum through the use of millimeter wave (MMW) spectrum that is significantly more plentiful, and ii) through the deployment of advanced medium access sharing techniques such as Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA).******The research plan proposed here will take a holistic view of the study of integrated dual microwave/MMW wireless networks as well as NOMA for the realization of 5G networks that meet the demands of new emerging applications. The research plan spans from practice to theory, from the design of practical algorithms and signal processing to the understanding of fundamental limitations. This includes thrusts on understanding the limitations of integrated microwave/MMW networks and how to practically configure such networks for optimal performance, as well as practical algorithms and signal processing for NOMA and how to configure NOMA for integrated microwave/MMW wireless networks.******The research plan proposed here will have significant impact and benefits. First, the research program will directly impact several undergraduate, master's and PhD students at a Canadian university through the training they received and the future careers that this training enables. Second, there is a dearth of highly qualified and trained personnel in 5G technology in Canada, and this program will help Canadian industry by supplying personnel with the required advanced expertise. The research plan will make significant progress to overcoming technical challenges to enabling 5G technology, and will contribute to the scientific understanding of wireless networks. In addition, wireless networks and cellular networks in particular have become ubiquitous in large part due to the connectivity, mobility and applications they provide their end users. With the new applications enabled by 5G, these benefits to society will increase dramatically.
