Floor construction with precast Hollowcore panels produced by Lafarge Precast Edmonton results in a commonly used rigid floor system. Continuity between the elements is ensured by bent rebars and shear studs. Once all these elements are installed, a structural concrete topping is poured between the reinforced concrete panels and over the entire floor. Engineers currently consider the floor system as a rigid diaphragm. However, the extent of composite action between the rigid diaphragm and the steel beams is not known. Therefore its potential benefit is not taken into account in the current design procedures for the steel structure. Design engineers simply do not consider any composite action between the Hollowcore and the standard hot rolled beam section. The project will allow Lafarge Precast Edmonton and Niche Development corp. to obtain accurate values of parameters needed to eventually calculate the composite action between Hollowcore panels and the steel beams, leading to design equations for bending strength and deflections.
