Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition that affects 3-7% of the general population and 40% of patients with obesity. Generally, diagnosis of sleep apnea and determining the efficacy OSA treatment involve overnight monitoring of breathing and other body functions during sleep at labs. However, due to the limited capacity of sleep labs in Canada there is a long waiting to do sleep studies. Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is designed to treat OSA. The aim of this project is to design, develop and evaluate a cost effective intraoral smart MAD integrating a multi sensor platform and EEG electrodes. The smart MAD will allow intraoral measurement of physiological parameters such as blood oxygen saturation, EEG signal, heart and breathing rate as well as accelerometry to detect sleep latency, onset and duration. The platform will have potential to document sleep patterns from home and evaluate the effectiveness of MAD treatment on time. There are currently no intelligent MADs on the market. Providing patients with such a device should help iMD Research acquire a projected 10% of Quebec MAD market share within the first 24 months of production. Due to the physiological monitoring feature of the MAD, Metropole Dentaire will be able to treat a much larger portion of the OSA population expected to double within 2 years of initial production. The healthcare providers in Canada will be able to document patient's sleep on a regular basis and evaluate the effectiveness of the MAD treatment without sending them to sleep labs. Thus, it will lower the heavy demand on sleep labs and lower the treatment cost in Canada. Documenting the sleep data on patients will help advance the sleep apnea research and treatment in Canada. In the future, the multi sensing platform and the EEG electrodes will be embedded in other intraoral wearable devices to diagnose sleep apnea and other health conditions from home. This will help diagnose sleep apnea faster and reduce the number of untreated sleep apnea patients, which, in turn, will reduce the economic loss related to untreated sleep apnea. Additionally, this will reduce the wait times in Canadian healthcare system for health condition diagnosis.
