英文摘要
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device is a gold standard treatment for Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Dental appliances, which are less bulky than CPAP device, can be prescribed for OSA. However, they are not effective for everyone with OSA like the CPAP device. The aim of the project is to design, develop and evaluate a flexible hybrid sleep monitoring platform that can be integrated with a CPAP device. The monitoring system will consist of printed CO2 sensor, photoplethysmograph (PPG) sensor, and conventional silicon integrated circuits (ICs) for accelerometer, power management, signal conditioning, processing and communications. Use of flexible hybrid electronics will combine the processing and storage capabilities of silicon ICs with the flexibility, and cost benefits of printed and organic electronics. The system will allow measurement of physiological parameters; end-tidal CO2, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate and breathing as well as accelerometry to detect sleep latency, onset and duration. Providing patients with the smart CPAP will help iMD Research and Object Research Systems acquire a projected 12% of Quebec CPAP market share within the first 36 months of production. Successful completion of the project will result in growth of the two industry partners in terms of number of employees, IP generated, kept and sold by them. With the help of smart CPAP device the healthcare providers will be able to document the CPAP users' sleep on a regular basis, evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment more accurately and retitrate the CPAP if necessary on time. Thus, there will be a decrease in the number of untreated OSA cases. This will in turn reduce the economic loss related with untreated OSA. Documenting the sleep data on CPAP users will put Canada in the forefront of sleep apnea research and treatment. Finally, the low cost flexible printed and organic sensors developed in the project will help to reduce the cost of other medical devices and will provide industry partners a market share in wearable industry.
