Water-related issues in the urban environment are intensifying as a result of urbanization and climate change.A major dimension of the water-related concerns for the urban environment is in relation to extreme stormswhich are causing many impacts, including erosion, overland flow resulting in pollutants of concern enteringwaterbodies, flooding dimensions (e.g. basement flooding and health effects), wastewater treatment bypasses,and the list continues. However, although there is awareness of the concerns, there are major challengesrelated to how to introduce effective methodologies that will incorporate into decision-making, the issues of theresulting risks.This research project will focus on the pollutants of concern (PoCs) and develop algorithms for incorporatingthe dimensions of risk into decision-making, including appropriate measures to improve the assessments toincorporate the elements of risk. The results of the research will include the development of strategies foreffective management options to improve water quality within flooded areas (e.g. by effectively investing(removing some of the risks) by preventing or at least decreasing, the health impacts from occurring). Theresults will also include an array of measures to improve the performance of technologies when an event doesoccur (e.g. stormwater ponds and maintenance thereof). This research will develop appropriate methodologiesto help identify gaps of knowledge and methodologies that currently exist, and refine the methodology withinthe tool entitled RROIT or the 'risk and return on investment tool', a tool which is being constructed to helpmunicipalities/consultants to make evidence-based cost-effective decisions to reduce flood risks.
