Currently, oil-based chemicals are used in the mining and oil industries to improve the efficiency of their processes. However, these chemicals are usually expensive and toxic to the environment. On the other hand, lignin and hemicellulose are under-utilized chemicals of pulping processes. During the next five years, the objectives of this CRC are to 1) develop industrially realistic and environmentally friendly processes for producing these chemicals from under-utilized biomass, and to 2) develop feasible processes to apply these chemicals in the wastewater systems, flotation processes of the mining industry, and tailing ponds of the mining and oil industries.
