The communities in Cape Breton, similar to many others worldwide, are facing challenges of environmental pollution associated health problems, such as high cancer incidence, mortality rate, and birth defects. Such issues are ascribed to, to a significant extent, water pollution because of the legacy of the local coke and steel industry over the last century. The objective of the CRC in Healthy Environments and Communities program is to develop a world-class innovative research program aimed at developing important new knowledge and useful technologies that improve environment protection, including water treatment, and environment-related health sciences, e.g., redox-based biology and medicine.
