We propose testing the feasibility of using an electrochemical filtration technology for the treatment of landfill leachate in collaboration with GHD Limited, a global leader in water, energy, and environmental engineering, consulting, and management. Discharge of untreated landfill leachate into the environment can contaminate ground and surface waters, making them hazardous to human and environmental health. Landfill leachate is a complex mixture that generally requires multiple treatment steps before it can be safely discharged into a receiving environment or be processed through municipal wastewater treatment facilities. GHD is looking for new effective and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment technologies. The expertise in electrochemical treatment technologies, including electrochemical filters, developed at Cape Breton University will help GHD to evaluate the potential of the technologies for wide application in wastewater treatment in Canada and abroad.**
