The proposed research program aims at developing a complete suite of technologies as the foundation towards 3D printed, individualized medical implants. The research will have a significant impact on the development and application of additive manufacturing in bone implants. Key innovations in the proposed research include the use of medical imaging to create individualized implants, implant design and manufacturing using lattice structures and functionally graded materials, and enhanced tribology of the customized implants. The project is expected to produce new intellectual property (IP) in the above areas, which will support the growth of Liburdi Engineering, a Canadian manufacturer of advanced additive manufacturing equipment, as well as medical imaging system provider Siemens Canada. The proposed project has significant potential impact for the growth of a key manufacturing technology, namely additive manufacturing, and its widespread application in biomedical implants.
