The program involves inter-disciplinary projects, whose aim in addition to the immediate gain of new knowledge is to mentor trainees in highly sought after analytical and computational skills. There are three areas of interest: pattern formation with anomalies, flow modelling and optimisation in landfill gas facilities and ecology. All these need theoretical analysis, often pioneering in the mathematical tools required, and numerical simulations. The two latter topics closely touch on engineering, entailing measurements and work with experimental data. Moreover, short and long term benefits are expected for the environment from improvement of landill well equipment and maintenance practices.
