Canada is a world leader in the design and manufacture of small and medium sized gas turbine engines for aerospace, marine and industrial applications. Canada also has a world renowned after-market industry for specialized components for gas turbines including exhaust heat exchangers, specialized exhaust nozzles and ejectors, and film and effusion cooled devices. Gas turbine design and development is, and has been a major area of research in Canada for decades. The research efforts in the areas of internal aerodynamics and combustion have lead to the development of very efficient gas turbines. However, the lack of focused research on certain add on components such as specialized exhaust nozzles and ejectors has resulted in unnecessary efficiency penalties. This research program will focus on innovation in the design and development of such specialized systems to ensure they meet today's demands for high efficiency and low noise and emissions. This research proposal focuses on research and innovation for specialized exhaust components for gas turbines. The research will specifically look at exhaust systems that incorporate specialized mixing nozzles, hyper mixing nozzles, water spray evaporative cooling systems, air-air ejectors, heat exchangers, impingement cooling, film and effusion cooling. This work is of direct interest to Companies like W. R. Davis Engineering Ltd of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada who design and manufacture these components in Canada, for a world market.
