Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing is one of the fastest growing fields in advanced manufacturing. In 2018, the AM market (including hardware, software, materials, and services) grew 18%, and was worth $9.3 billion (USD). AM is increasingly becoming a part of Ontario's manufactured goods industry, which had revenue of $298 billion in 2016, more than 44% of the total national manufactured goods revenue. To maximize the value of AM technology for the Canadian market, Small and Medium size Enterprises (SMEs) in Ontario's manufacturing industry require AM support, including design and product innovations, process improvement, materials testing, and de-risking of technology adoption. Mohawk College's Additive Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) is at the forefront of this revolution in Canada. AMIC is a regional hub for expertise in metals additive manufacturing that helps local businesses build organizational capacity in AM through applied research projects, training, workshops and conferences. As an applied research lab, AMIC and its team of expert staff, faculty and students provide a test bed for industry to develop new products and processes. AMIC is requesting a Desktop Metal Studio System+ (DMSS+). This system's benefits for AMIC are greater speed; less post-processing, a larger range of metals and alloys that can be produced and tested; and the ability to make components with new geometries. The DMSS+ will expand training and applied research opportunities to provide a unique learning environment. Students will receive a deep understanding of sintering, metallographic characterization and alloy characteristics. In combination with the AMIC Materials Development and Characterization lab, students will explore new alloy combinations, including in situ alloying. Mohawk College is excited to use this exciting technology to support Canadian manufacturers in metal additive manufacturing applied research, and training of students and industry professionals.
