Polymers are found in almost all aspects of modern life. Two particularly important polymer classes for Canadian society will be developed in this research program. Oil sands are one of the most important Canadian natural resources. Unfortunately, the oil sands industry has a negative impact in the environment. The proposed Canada Research Chair will develop novel polymer flocculants that will eliminate environmental hazards associated with oil sands exploration. Canada also has rich natural gas resources that can be used to make polyolefins (polyethylene and polypropylene). The new polyolefins proposed in this program will add value to this important Canadian resource.
