The power of stable carbon isotope geochemistry lies in deciphering reactions controlling the dynamic cycling, distribution, and fate of carbon compounds in the Earth and Environment. This is the uniting theme of my research on the Earths subsurface waters exploring the frontiers in carbon cycling in both ancient fracture waters kilometers deep in the Earths crust where water-rock reactions support chemoautotrophic microbial communities; and investigating contaminant bioremediation in near surface groundwaters. My research addresses key themes in two areas of the University of Torontos Strategic Research Plan: EXPLORE: Our Place in the Universe and SUSTAIN: Humanity and the Environment
