This project focuses on increasing the energy density, increasing the lifetime and lowering the cost of lithium-ion batteries for automotive and grid energy storage applications. Existing advanced diagnostic methods, like high precision coulometry, isothermal battery microcalorimetry and others will be used to identify and optimize new Li-ion battery chemistries with lifetimes of many decades. New electrolytes, new positive electrode materials and new negative electrode materials will be synthesized or procured and studied during this work. The Dahn lab will enter a strong partnership with Tesla Motors, Tesla Energy and the R+D facility of Tesla Canada (Dartmouth, N.S.) in June 2016 so that the results of this work can be rapidly implemented in Tesla's world-leading products.
