英文摘要
Traditional approaches have created a scaffold for the study of biodiversity, but they are incapable of surveying, managing, and protecting it on a planetary scale. Dr. Hebert's research is resolving this deficit by developing a new system for species identification based on patterns of sequence diversity in short, standardized gene regions (DNA barcodes). Because of their digital format, DNA barcodes allow fully automated species identifications. Over the next term of his CRC, Dr. Hebert will expand the DNA barcode reference library and employ next generation sequencers to revolutionize the ability to monitor and manage biodiversity with major scientific and societal impacts.
