In this research collaboration, it is intended to develop materials and films for sustainable packages with functional properties for better safety and detection ability, thus packaging with an enhanced value for the environment and the society. More specifically, the objectives that will be pursued in this project in the next five years are 1) the development of sustainable packaging structures, 2) the development of safe and active packages and 3) the development of active and smart packages. The approach that will be followed in order to achieve these objectives is :(1) Study of the effect of materials parameters and their innovative layout in multilayer structures;(2) Optimize the process conditions, from the extruder to the final converting stage;(3) Develop strategies for maximum sustainable advantage through innovative material combinations. The potential outcomes and impacts of this partnership are numerous from environmental, social and economic points of view for both the partner company and Canada. The development of recyclable plastic packaging solutions will significantly improve their environmental impact as well as economic value. Improving safety and increasing the shelf life of packaged food will reduce waste and will have significant economic, social and environmental impacts. Smart and interactive packaging can reduce health risks associated with contaminated food products. More direct impacts and outcomes from the partnership will be the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP) as well as expertise and infrastructure development. Finally, this partnership will position Polytechnique as the foremost destination for the Canadian packaging industry for the development of better solutions for its needs. The partnership will help the industrial partner in the development of innovative, specific and competitive products as well as in training and knowledge enhancement of their personnel.
