The Chair will investigate nonlinear dynamics and stability, fluid-structure interactions and active control of shell structures for biomedical and aerospace applications. There are similarities between the shells of aircraft, space rockets and those for biomedical applications. These structures are usually made by a skin that is conveniently modelled as a shell. However, the material properties are very different. Shells made of advance composite and soft materials will be studied, introducing hyperelasticity and viscoelasticity as well as large deformations. The human aorta will be modelled with pulsatile blood flow inside a soft laminated hyperelastic and viscoelastic shell.
