The requested equipment supports the following research activities of the applicant and of the only co-applicant. 1) System for testing the dynamic response of human aortas and aortic grafts in an automated mock circulatory loop (Prof. Amabili, applicant); 2) Development of a new hubless ventricular assist device (Prof. Mongrain, co-applicant). These researches share the need for an automated mock circulatory loop with closed-loop flow control. This equipment is constituted by a turnkey pulsatile pump reproducing the cardiac action from 0 to 240 BPM. The apparatus will be equipped with confocal lasers for the high-resolution non-contact measurement of the static and dynamic displacements of biomedical samples under internal pressure. This equipment can be used to investigate several characteristics of biomedical structures. It is compact, easy to install and ideal for determining the behaviour of structures under various conditions. It is equipped with several transducers and a dedicated acquisition system for the management of experimental data. It will be a key factor in allowing for the first time the vibrational characterization of the large arteries of the human body or of relevant prostheses. It will be used by four master's students and one post-doctoral fellow working under the supervision of the applicants.
