The Canadian shellfish industry is at risk from ocean acidification, which reduces the availability of calcium carbonate that shellfish use to form their shells. Vibrio is a genus of bacteria that often causes shellfish disease, and there is evidence that their impact is increasing with rising seawater temperature. Over the next five years, Dr. Green will study the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of shellfish adaption to these stressors. By determining the molecular mechanisms involved in shellfish evolutionary adaption, an expected outcome of this project will be implementation of a selective-breeding program to future-proof the Canadian shellfish industry against these threats.
