Common tasks such as prolonged standing or sitting have been linked to low back pain, yet there is sparse research on the joint mechanical responses to these sedentary and seemingly innocuous exposures. Dr. Callaghans Canada Research Chair in Spine Biomechanics and Injury Prevention will examine how injuries initiate on a microscopic level and will apply this fundamental knowledge to develop methods to assess daily loading and set workplace exposure limits. This knowledge will improve standards to prevent low back injuries through involvement with Health & Safety Associations and the Centre of Research Expertise for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders.
