Professor Arthur Chans research program will focus on understanding the atmospheric chemistry and health impacts of understudied and emerging pollution sources, including wildfires, cannabis smoke and food cooking. Their contributions to poor air quality in urban areas are poised to exceed those from motor vehicles, especially in indoor environments, where Canadians spend most of their time. Chans group will characterize the chemical composition of emissions, study their atmospheric transformations and assess their toxicities. Better understanding of these sources will lead to effective solutions to mitigate their impacts and safeguard human health.
