Healthy Canadians take for granted many of their daily activities, such as walking or driving a car. However, these common dynamic activities are not without risk; nearly 80% of all Canadian hospital admissions are due to unexpected falls or motor vehicle collisions. Fortunately, the convergence of biomechanics, mechatronics, and advances in system dynamics and control has created a "perfect storm" of opportunity for the creation of new assistive and rehabilitation devices. But how can a designer test an idea for a new prosthesis or steering system before using it on a human? The safety implications are profound, especially if the device contains electrical motors and controllers. Computer simulations can help answer these and other questions, but the simulations must be accurate and fast. This Canada Research Chair will develop new modelling algorithms to accelerate the design and control of automotive and biomechatronic systems that will make daily tasks safer and easier for healthy, disabled, and elderly Canadians.
